THE MARIAN GARDEN
The Marian Garden, with its “living arbor,” was originally gifted to the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon from VCS families in 2011 in honor of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon’s 125th Anniversary. It was constructed by Eagle Scouts Victor Agostinelli and Remy Delplanche and several volunteers. The time capsule was organized by Herb Lommen and Girls Scout Troop #43543, Claire Delplanche, Rachel Frankovic, Adriel Maneely, and Mary Oehler.
Two years ago, VCS Middle School Principal, Jennifer Gfroerer, NJHS Program Coordinator Julee Richards, and the eighth grade National Junior Honor Society recognized that the courtyard and some of its structures had weathered and needed renovating. They collaborated with Matt Sander Landscape Services of Beaverton to reimagine the Marian Garden for their annual community service project. The Marian Garden’s new design is thoughtfully planned and incorporates native plants, natural materials, and student artwork.
On October 18, 2018, we rededicate this renewed peaceful multi-purpose space in honor of the Sisters more than 130-year legacy and their mission of education at Valley Catholic School.
We are grateful to everyone who has generously and creatively supported this project. Special thanks to Matt Sander Landscape Services for their donation of the garden design and labor. We also want to recognize Antoinette Arenz and the Juan Young Trust for the significant grant that helped complete this project.
In honor of the Sisters’ continuing commitment to education, we invite you to recognize their legacy with a gift and/or personal commemoration. Thank you for your generous support!
The following commemoration opportunities are available:
- Stepping stone (engraved) ($250 each)
- Benches (w/plaque) ($500 each)
- Trees (w/plaque) ($1,000 each)
