Gala Raffle FAQ’s

“Fly Me to New York” Gala Raffle FAQs

What is the raffle for?

Every year at the Valley Catholic School Annual Gala (formerly the Auction) a raffle prize is drawn.  Each family is encouraged to buy or sell a minimum of two raffle tickets per student. Raffle proceeds are dedicated to operating expenses that make many of our programs possible.

What is the raffle prize?

The raffle prize is a trip to New York with airfare, lodging, dinner, a Broadway show, sightseeing tour and a $750 VISA card.  The drawing for this prize will be held during the “Fly Me to the Moon” Gala on April 27, 2013, at the Portland Hilton.

How much does a raffle ticket cost?

$25 per ticket.

How does the raffle campaign get started?

The raffle was launched during an all-school assembly where the details of the raffle prize and the sales incentive prizes for students were revealed.  In addition, a packet was sent or mailed home with an informational flyer and two ticket order forms.

Will each student receive a packet?

No.  Only one student per family will receive the packet, but there was multiple order forms in each packet for all students within the family. More order forms are also available online.

How are raffle tickets sold?

An order form is available to purchase raffle tickets.  The form can be used to purchase multiple tickets.  Once an order is received in the Gala Office and processed by the Raffle Team, a confirmation
letter stating the purchaser’s ticket number(s) will be sent through US Mail.   It is imperative that all forms be completed in a legible fashion to ensure accuracy.

Who can purchase raffle tickets?

Anyone over the age of 18 can purchase a ticket.  Purchaser must also be in the State of Oregon at the time of purchase.

Can I purchase a raffle ticket for someone else?

Yes. Simply complete the order form with the name of the person for whom you are purchasing the raffle ticket.

How does a student become eligible for the iPad incentive prize?

Every two tickets a student sells makes them eligible for one chance in the drawing for the iPad.

For example:

Student A sells 1 raffle ticket = 0 entries for incentive prize

Student B sells 2 raffle tickets = 1 entry for incentive prize

Student C sells 6 raffle tickets = 3 entries for incentive prize

What if I have more than one child at Valley Catholic?

We highly encourage that each student sell a minimum of two raffle tickets.

How does a student become eligible for the Krispy Kreme party incentive prize?

Elementary School and Middle School students will only become eligible for the Krispy Kreme party if their entire grade (i.e. 4th grade) sells the most tickets. High School students will become eligible for the Krispy Kreme party if their grade (i.e. 10h grade) has the highest participation.  There will be a winning grade at each school – ES, MS, & HS!

How was the Krispy Kreme party incentive chosen?

In an effort to maintain consistency at each school it was decided that the Krispy Kreme party was the most popular and economical way to reward students across all three schools – ES, MS, HS.  All three principals were involved in this decision.  Special dietary restrictions will be considered and reasonable accommodations will be made for students if their grade wins this incentive prize.

Can a raffle order be made over the phone?

No. We require a completed order form for all raffle ticket purchases.

Can I purchase a raffle ticket, along with other transactions (i.e. cash donations, reservations, sponsorships, etc)?

Yes. The Raffle Team can process an order with multiple transactions.  We respectfully request that you verify accuracy of your payment to include all transactions, and an accurate total. However, raffle ticket orders cannot be combined with any online activity (i.e. cash donations, reservations, sponsorships).

HS Vacation Packages Update

The results are in!

The Spirit Week Participation Challenge for High School Vacation packages is complete. While Spirit Week was filled with a variety of activities and friendly competitions among the classes, the Gala Team also took the opportunity to up the ante by challenging the students to raise funds for each class to build their preferred class-sponsored High School Vacation Package. These packages will be donated as trips for the Live Auction in our Benefit Gala.

Here are the participation rates thus far for the High School Vacation Package Challenge:

Seniors- 54%
Juniors- 28%
Sophmores- 25%
Freshman- 47%

Many thanks to our high school families who have contributed to High School Vacation Packages and have helped build some momentum for our Gala!

If you were unable to donate during this fun-filled week, there’s still time! The High School Vacation Packages Campaign ends Feb. 15, 2013. The class with the highest participation rate at that time will enjoy a Krispy Kreme Party!

Please download the class trip donation form here or click here to donate online.

As a reminder, our annual Gala provides the financial support that makes many of our school programs possible. As a PreK through 12 school, we invite the entire community to play a role in supporting our school. From grade projects to class baskets to high school vacation packages, all of these help raise funds that directly benefit your student and our community.  You make this possible through your donations.

How much should I donate?

We respectfully request a donation of $25 per high school student. The donation is considered a family donation, so each child will receive credit for spirit points, regardless of the amount. However, for families with more than one student, we highly encourage a donation of $25 per student so that each class succeeds in creating the special trip that they have chosen for the Gala.

All donations are tax-deductible. Donations of $100 or more are also eligible for our Procurement Contest.

Thank you for your support of the 2013 Gala! We hope you will join us on April 27!

Annual Fund Update – January 18, 2013

Each year, the SSMO Foundation raises funds that directly benefit our students and teachers at Valley Catholic School, the residents of Maryville Nursing Home and Memory Care, and our community of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon. These critical funds ensure that immediate needs can be met as they arise.

To date, we have raised more than $355,000 toward such expenses. We are grateful to the parents, grandparents, alumni, employees, and special friends whose kindness and generosity ensure the health and longevity of our community.

Gifts to the Annual Fund are welcome year-round.

Scholarship Established in Honor of Kipp and Teresa Johnson

The SSMO Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Kipp and Teresa Johnson Endowed Scholarship for advanced math students.  Foundation Team members worked with Jeff and Bobbi Barry to establish this endowment.

Jeff and Bobbi Barry are parents of Valerie ’08 and David ’11, and longtime supporters of the advanced math program at Valley Catholic High School.  According to the Barrys, Kipp Johnson’s advanced math classes were instrumental in the success of both Valerie and David in their fields of study. Valerie is a Ph.D student in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University.  She graduated summa cum laude with a BSEE degree from the University of Idaho in May 2012. David is a sophomore majoring in Electrical Engineering at University of Idaho.  He is a member of both Engineering Scholars and the Honors College.

Kipp Johnson became part of the Valley Catholic Faculty in 1986 when he was hired as a math teacher.  One year later, he became the Chairman of the Department.  Mr. Johnson instructs students in Eighth-Grade Math through Calculus 3.  His wife, the late Teresa Johnson, graduated from Multnomah School of The Bible.  She was a devoted homemaker.  Teresa, known for her pleasant and caring personality, sent care packages to VC alumni who needed an occasional boost. Together, Kipp and Teresa have impacted the lives of many students at Valley Catholic.

The endowment is a tribute to Kipp and Teresa Johnson and will provide annual scholarships for selected students who exhibit an aptitude for math. Additional contributions in any amount may be made to this endowment by contacting Tricia Blood at tblood@ssmomnistries.org in the SSMO Foundation or by making a gift online.

Health Care for aging adults: Your family. Your decisions. Jan 10

The Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, in conjunction with the SSMO Foundation, present the following Bethany Center workshops.

This panel discussion will take place in the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Convent & Administration Building.

Caring and coping: Decisions surrounding an aging adult
January 10, 2013
7 p.m.

Health care changes for aging adults are challenging – not only for seniors but for their families and caregivers.

On Thursday, Jan. 10, Bethany Center will host “Caring and Coping: Decisions Surrounding an Aging Adult.”  A panel discussion will focus on legal documents to have in place, how to negotiate end-of-life discussions, and the differences between assisted living, managed care, and hospice.  Panelists will include Liz Fischer, Hospice and Palliative Care of Washington County; Michael Kilbury, Maryville Nursing Home & Maryville Memory Care; and Karen Skoog, RN, BSN, Senior Resource Alliance NW.

About the panelists

Liz Fischer

Liz Fischer does Community Outreach for Hospice and Palliative Care of Washington County. She has experience ranging from working for a small three-person company to a very large high tech company in the area but has found what she calls her “true passion” working for Hospice and Palliative Care of Washington County.

She has experienced “the relief of having hospice involved” when her grandmother was on their service and wants “to share the incredible gift of hospice with community members.”

Michael Kilbury

Michael Kilbury grew up in Little Rock, Ark. where he attended Catholic High School for Boys.  He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. and moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1998.

A licensed long-term care administrator, Kilbury is the assistant administrator at Maryville Nursing Home and oversees the operations of Maryville Memory Care. He and his wife Margaret reside in Portland with their two children, Levi and Adele.

Karen Skoog

Karen Skoog, RN, BSN, has been working in the field of care management for over 14 years. After graduating from the University of Oregon School of Nursing in 1975, she worked in intensive care, coronary care and kidney dialysis. After raising her family, she refocused her career into case management and geriatric care management.

Skoog is especially interested in families in crisis as they deal with chronic illnesses and neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. She works with clients and their families as they face aging and/or health issues and assists them in collaborating with the appropriate health and professional services to create a plan that meets their needs and provides enhanced quality of life.
